Ocean grove | Kitchen design

The Brief

For over 15 years, the Ocean Grove beach house has been a relaxing retreat for my client, a busy single mum and her two young men. Sleeping 13, this home has hosted many families and friends over the years and witnessed toddlers growing into teens and growing out of their wet suits. As an 80’s build, the home’s fixtures and finishes are looking a little tired and in need of a refresh. My client loves to cook for plenty and spend Summer evenings on the west facing deck. Her key preferences included a stone benchtop, a neutral colour palette and a serving window to the deck.

The Concept

A entertainer and a lover of seafood, this coastal concept takes inspiration from the home’s location, Ocean Grove and its function; relaxed entertaining.

Calming, pale ocean blues and white sandy tones set the colour palette. Natural woven materials connect back to the beach and maintain the relaxed vibe.

The DESIGN

  1. Coastal Contrast

A monochromatic palette ensures the space feels contemporary and crisp. Black accents add to the level of sophistication yet woven materials and timber keep the space feeling relaxed.

2. Coastal Neutrals

A neutral palette with wicker, timber and soft coastal blue and grey connect this design back to nature and the beach. It’s fresh, white and light. It’s relaxed as it should be and sandy feet are welcome, making this concept a winner.

In both designs, V-groove panelling applied to overheads and the pantry add visual interest and add to the coastal feel. Track lighting provides adequate illumination for food prep and a feature pendant over the breakfast bar adds visual interest. Stone selection is reminiscent of an oyster shell and extends to the servery windows.

When the time is right, this concept can easily be applied cohesively to other spaces in the house, giving the space a lighter, brighter update that reflects it surrounds and the family who spend time in this coastal retreat.
